Stock market rises after strong US jobs report

NEW YORK ? Robust hiring in the U.S. is boosting the stock market in early trading.

The government says employers added 195,000 jobs in June. Economists had predicted a gain of 165,000. The unemployment rate remained at 7.6 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 76 points, or 0.5 percent, at 15,065 shortly after the market opened Friday. The Standard & Poor?s 500 rose nine points, also 0.5 percent, to 1,624.

The Nasdaq climbed 17 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,461.

Other markets are showing big movements. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note jumped to a two-year high of 2.70 percent, up from 2.56 percent shortly before the jobs report came out. It was a sign that investors think the economy is improving.

The dollar rose and gold fell.

Boiling Spring Lakes commissioner to run for mayor

Published: Friday, July 5, 2013 at 8:51 a.m.
Last Modified: Friday, July 5, 2013 at 8:51 a.m.

Mayor Richard White of Boiling Spring Lakes won't run for a third term this fall.

"It's time for somebody else to do it," he said, adding that he intends to take his grandson fishing "every day that we can."

White, a fiscal conservative, said he was particularly proud that during his term the city was able to reimburse property owners a portion of the $500 each had paid to fund the new water system, which later was turned over to Brunswick County. More than $2 million was returned, he said.

White would have preferred to pay back the entire $500, but the council voted to only return $345 to each property owner. "I just needed one more vote," he said.

"One other thing that I'm very proud of is that we never borrowed a single penny during my four years in office," White said. White argued that it was cheaper to pay for capital items, such as new vehicles, out of city funds rather than paying interest on a loan.

White led efforts to substantially reduce personnel costs for the city, money he says that instead went to pave several streets over the past two years. It had been 10 years before that that any streets had been paved, he said.

He also led efforts to reduce property tax rates, including a three-cent reduction, from 17 cents per $100 of value to 14 cents, for the fiscal 2013-2014 budget.

White was police chief in Boiling Spring Lakes for 10 years, from 1998 to 2008. In 2009 he was elected mayor and re-elected in 2011.

One of White's biggest concerns is building a new spillway for Big Lake. The city has developed plans for the spillway and now is investigating how to finance it. White has often said that Big Lake and the spillway are crucial elements to the future of Boiling Spring Lakes.

White said that he also intends to take his grandson, a train enthusiast like his grandfather, to the Tweetsie Railroad Wild West Theme Park in Blowing Rock whenever he can. White said he worked at Tweetsie as a cowboy and an Indian when he was a teenager.

Harmony Ultimate and Smart Hub review: Logitech outdoes itself with new remotes

Harmony Ultimate and Smart Hub review: Logitech outdoes itself with new remotes

Until now, Logitech's Harmony line has been the name in programmable remotes. Now the company's back with three follow-up products, and they differ enough from earlier models to warrant an explanation. Instead of using a programmable IR remote, the Harmony Ultimate, Harmony Smart Control and Harmony Ultimate Hub each offload the IR-emitting duties to a networked device, allowing smartphones and tablets to act as remotes too. Additionally, the Hub uses Bluetooth to control your game console. Ranging in price from $99 to $349, the lineup covers almost every budget, with the Hub sold as a standalone accessory for smartphones and tablets. Meanwhile, the Smart Control includes a simple remote, and the high-end Ultimate Hub swaps a basic remote for the Harmony Touch. How exactly might these enhance your home theater enjoyment? Read on to find out.

Cambridge Audio's Minx Go Couples Crazy Battery Life With Great, Portable Sound

minx-go1A little while ago, I reviewed the Cambridge Minx Air 200 and found it a solid new performer in the UK-based company's new lineup of wireless speakers. Today, I'm looking at the Cambridge Audio Minx Go, a portable Bluetooth speaker with 18 hours of advertised battery life and a $149 price tag. It's bigger than cheaper competitors like the Jawbone Jambox, but it's got plenty more juice, too, and Cambridge's high-quality pedigree.

Github tool extracts all your Google Reader data, including starred items, tags and more

TUAW writes, Google Reader is shutting down and you, hopefully, have backed up your Reader data for future import into your reader app of choice. As pointed out by Mihai Parparita of persistent.info, Google's Takeout service creates a backup of the RSS subscriptions, but fails to include all the data like starred items, tags, comments and more. To grab all your data, Parparita has created a tool that uses Google's API to pull down everything but the kitchen sink from your Reader account. You can download the reader_archive tool from github and check out the article on persistent.info. The article details?
