We are so happy to receive a wedding anniversary greeting card from the wife of my husband?s past office boss. From all friends and relatives we got, she seem to be the first and most active person who kept on greeting us on our special day. I met her a few times and we talk like we are long lost friends together with her best friend whom my husband also introduced to me. Whenever they are around, I feel relaxed and I feel like they are my sisters who always have a listening ear for me.

Anyhow, she gave us a gift certificate for me and husband to eat together in a Chinese restaurant. What a generous gift idea. We are touched of her being so thoughtful and kind to us. So my husband and I? decided to spend it last Monday.? I told my husband of my idea for us to buy a 4th wedding anniversary gift for ourselves like a new appliance or furniture for our house. I was looking for cabinets online the other day and found new products like blomus stainless steal cabinets. It looks nice for a medicine cabinet, I thought. And then I searched about what blomus is and its a new company that designs furnitures and accessory appliances online with elegant and modern designs. Anyhow, we had a great time talking about our family adventures and nostalgia about the past that night.

2. Pay attention to out of the way areas while cleaning, such as the basement or under the bed. ? As far as attics go, this is energy ?hanging over you.? ? Do you really need all the stuff that makes up that clutter? ? If Spring Cleaning is the only time you see this stuff than maybe it?s time to get rid of it. ? Cleaning up clutter helped me relax (ie. I could find things easier!)
3. In the kitchen, you leave your back exposed if you face the wall while cooking? , a position that is considered weak in feng shui. Hang a mirror on the wall over the stove so that you can see what?s going on behind you while you cook. Putting a large mirror behind the stove made it so I wouldn?t be surprised when someone came up behind me.
4. Fresh flowers bring beautiful uplifting energy to the kitchen. Place a bowl of fruit, a vase of flowers, or a living plant on your kitchen table, windowsill, or wherever the layout of your kitchen allows. (In feng shui, dried flowers have no life energy in them, so they are not recommended. If real plants are impossible, you can use very lifelike fake ones, but the effect will not be nearly as strong.)
5. If your love life needs a quick boost, you can use the art of placement (Feng Shui for Romance) to produce the romantic results you desire. Dust and cobwebs on the fans, walls, light fixtures and ceilings should be cleaned away. Enhance your space with romance colors, such as shades of pinks, reds and whites. Guys, this does not mean it has to be feminine. You can use maroon, grayish tones of pinks and whites to achieve the same results. You don?t want one color to overpower the others,so consulting with a Feng Shui expert is a good idea.

book review: zombies of the world | librarianaut

Zombies of the World: A Field Guide to the Undead is Ross Payton?s ?non-fiction? book about how to deal with the zombie menace facing the world. It?s an enjoyable read.

Payton is a roleplaying gamer (he wrote a couple of supplements for Monsters and Other Childish Things, an Arc Dream game I really like) and it shows. There are lots of good hooks for stories in these pages along with an evident sense of humour. There are several references to types of zombies that have a distinctive style of dress, and how strange it is that part of that zombie species? characteristics is the ability to find such odd vestments. There are also a few references to Temporally Displaced Robots who caused the Aztec mummies to go extinct.

The book is filled with full colour illustrations in a clean comic-book style. Evidently there were a bunch of artists, but the pictures work very well together. I also really liked the advertising pamphlets from the North American Necrological Research Institute, who are out to understand the zombies of the world and communicate with them.

The writing style is clear and conversational, never dry. There might be a few too many winks to the reader (including the whole idea of the dancing zombie, which I do love) to really take it seriously as a fake reference book. You could completely use it in a contemporary roleplaying game as the work of a crank that turns out to be useful.

One of my favourite things about the book is how it describes a world in which zombies are a menace but haven?t driven humanity to an apocalypse. It?s very hopeful. There are people who are concerned about preserving them as a species (and not solely because they?re the source of almost unlimited energy, if the secret could be cracked).

It?s not quite as ?practical? as something like Max Brooks? Zombie Survival Guide but I really enjoyed Payton?s book and would recommend it to fans of zombies in general, but especially if they?re gamers looking for a good undead-centric setting book.

A number of times I?ve been approached by happy family members telling me about an elderly relative who, at age 75, 80, or 85, is getting married and Isn?t that teriffic? Well, I suppose it is a happy event, but . . .

Unfortunately, the likelihood that a spouse will need nursing home care increases dramatically in later years. And the spouse who continues to reside in the community is legally responsible for paying the costs of nursing home care for the other spouse, regardless of how long they have been married! As you know, those costs can easily exceed $6,000 per month, for a national average nursing home stay of 2.5 years. That?s $180,000.

Now the spouse at home may be able to protect a certain amount of money and get the spouse in the nursing home to qualify for Medicaid, which will indeed pick up the nursing home bill. In most states, that amount is currently $109,540, plus the house, car, and personal property. But if the couple has a total of, say, $400,000, and let?s say most of that came into the marriage as the savings of the healthy spouse, then the healthy spouse will only be able to protect $109,560 of his or her savings, and all the rest may have to be spent down on the nursing home spouse?s care.

Well, why can?t they just sign a pre-nuptial (pre-marital) agreement? Typically, such an agreement states that each spouse is free to do what they want with the assets they brought into the marriage. Some such agreements even specifically state that neither spouse is legally obligated to pay for the long-term care of the other spouse. Unfortunately, the Medicaid laws of most states simply brush these agreements aside and act as if it were never signed. So, while the pre-nuptial contract is completely enforceable and legal for all other purposes, it is useless for Medicaid planning purposes.

So is there nothing the happy couple can do to protect themselves? Short of staying single and ?living in sin,? each partner might consider establishing an irrevocable trust and transferring all but $100,000 into such trust. That way, no matter which spouse goes into the nursing home, only the money outside the trust will be at risk. However, a transfer into such a trust will result in a period of disqualification from Medicaid, so this needs to be approached very carefully.

What about income? Must the at-home spouse (?Community Spouse?)?share a portion of his/her income with the nursing home spouse? The good news is that, no, the Community Spouse is not legally required to contribute one dime to the nursing home costs of the other spouse. In fact, if the Community Spouse?s income is very low, the nursing home spouse is able to shift some of his/her income to the Community Spouse before having to pay the nursing home. What is ?too low?? This is set out in the federal rules to be below $1,822/month, although this can be as high as $2,739?and sometimes even higher?depending on the financial need of the Community Spouse.

In any event, a word to the wise. As some of my clients say, ?It would be so much simpler if we didn?t have any money!?
