African American women have lower breast cancer survival rates than white women and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) scientists are studying why ? as well as how to increase their life spans.

The lead researchers are Lisa M. Coussens, PhD, professor in the UCSF pathology department and co-director of the Program in Cancer Immunity and Microenvironment; and Hope S. Rugo, MD, professor of medicine and director of UCSF Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education.

The two researchers, along with E. Shelley Hwang, MD, chief of breast surgery at Duke University, have been awarded a $6.5 million grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure for the project, considered a novel approach to treating the most aggressive breast cancer tumors.

Even though more white women have breast cancer in the United States, black women are more likely to die of the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. The discrepancy was previously attributed to differences in access to screening, diagnosis and treatment. But more recently researchers have found that younger black women are more likely to develop the most aggressive type of breast tumors ? basal-type or triple-negative ? which are more likely to be resistant to standard cancer treatment.

In Coussens? lab, mice have responded to a drug that blocks a specific type of immune cell seen in these aggressive cancers when given in combination with chemotherapy, significantly slowing tumor growth, halting the spread of cancer to the lungs and prolonging survival. Preliminary results, the researchers say, indicate that this drug causes few side effects and could be highly effective with advanced-staged tumors. The immune cell is called a tumor associated macrophage, or TAM; an increased number of these cells in tumors has been tied to more aggressive cancer.

Targeting TAMS is a completely new way of treating cancer, the researchers say, with a potential to prolong survival and cure chemotherapy resistant disease. The treatment attempts to teach the immune system to better support the ability of chemotherapy to kill tumor cells.

The clinical trial will be conducted at UCSF as well as at Vanderbilt and Duke universities. Patient advocates are integral to the research study at all three institutions; the lead patient advocate is Susan Sampson from UCSF. ?

New Quinnipiac Poll Shows Growing Support for Ohio Senate Bill 5 (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | More Ohioans are developing a fiscally responsible mindset, according to a Quinnipiac poll released today. Opposition to Ohio Senate Bill 5 (Issue 2) has significantly decreased. The effort to share accurate facts about the pending legislation by the nonprofit group Building a Better Ohio likely played a large part in the statistical changes.

In just six weeks, Ohio voters will decide the fate of the job-saving bill. The slight increase in public employee pension and insurance plans will prevent more layoffs and the need to raise costs on struggling taxpayers. According to the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, opposition to SB5 decreased from 24 to 13 points. Polling institute Assistant Director Peter Brown stated public opinion within the Buckeye State appears to be moving in favor of the bill.

A Quinnipiac poll conducted in July showed a majority of Ohioans favored specific aspects of the bill but did not fully support changes in collective bargaining laws. Misleading statements and incorrect facts by the liberal We Are Ohio group and union officials caused fear in public workers. In the months after the Senate Bill 5 protests on the statehouse lawn, a multitude of accurate information filtered into living rooms and offices, decreasing the panic over collective bargaining changes.

The September poll was organized after opposing sides created television commercials to express their respective points of view. Building a Better Ohio commercials featured a former Ohio firefighter and current Toledo mayor sharing his story about the budget cuts resulting in the need for him to hang up his bunker gear and search for a new line of work.

We Are Ohio and union-sponsored commercials attempted to tug at the heart and featured firefighters worried about their safety with collective bargaining changes. The commercial's focus on a reduction in safety gear and equipment if the law passes was entirely false.

According to Building a Better Ohio representative Jason Maulk, SB5 includes wording that permits firefighters and law enforcement officers to demand necessary safety equipment and places staffing level decisions into the hands of fire chiefs and police commanders.

Poll Highlights

* 60 percent of Ohioans polled support basing pay increases on merit and factoring in seniority. Those polled oppose a continuation of the automatic pay increase system which awards annual raises regardless of performance, advanced education, infractions or attendance.

* 59 percent favor increasing public employee contributions to their health insurance plans by 15 percent.

* 56 percent support increasing public employee pension contributions to 10 percent.

* Support for limiting collective bargaining privileges to specific aspects of employment increased to 40 percent, with 10 percent undecided.

* Party identification: Poll respondents were 34 percent Democratic, 26 percent Republican and 40 percent identifying themselves as independent or other.

Inside is the same Broadcom 2835 SOC that powers the Roku 2 XD, XS, and HD and, while it tops out at 720p just like the low-end HD, it actually sports more RAM than the current budget model. Presumably the loss of Bluetooth and the SD slot will offset any cost increase associated with moving up to 256MB of memory. Modified vaccine shows promise in preventing malaria

Continuing a global effort to prevent malaria infections, Michigan State University researchers have created a new malaria vaccine ? one that combines the use of a disabled cold virus with an immune system-stimulating gene ? that appears to increase the immune response against the parasite that causes the deadly disease.

At the same time, the group led by Andrea Amalfitano of the College of Osteopathic Medicine also discovered another immune-system stimulating agent ? created at MSU and which has been successful in improving immune responses in vaccines for diseases such as HIV ? paradoxically made for a less effective malaria vaccine.

Both of the findings will help researchers develop more effective vaccine platforms in general, and malaria vaccines specifically, hopefully leading to human clinical trials soon, Amalfitano said. The research is published in the current edition of PLoS ONE.

"Researchers across the globe are working on ways to prevent people from becoming infected with malaria," said Amalfitano of the disease that kills up to a million people each year, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. "Some vaccines are showing promise, but they are not as effective as they need to be for any mass distribution."

Amalfitano and his research team are focusing on one such vaccine platform, spearheaded by the U.S. Army, that targets a certain gene on the malaria parasite, a protein called Circumsporozoite Protein, or CSP.

That protein is thought to play a key role in creating an immune response to the malaria parasite; past research shows people infected by malaria multiple times will begin creating an immune response to this protein, suggesting at some level it could be protective.

"What we are looking to do is improve the ability of the vaccine to induce immune responses to that protein," Amalfitano said. "We are adding genes to the vaccine to try and stimulate the immune system."

Those genetic agents, similar to chemical adjuvants, are stimulants that improve the ability of vaccines to induce beneficial immune responses in general.

In mouse models, the researchers used two such "gene-adjuvants": rEA and EAT-2, both of which aimed to illicit improved immune responses to the malaria CSP gene. Surprisingly, the rEA agent ? which was developed at MSU in part by the late Barnett Rosenberg ? did not produce the desired result and in fact seemed to worsen the animal's ability to generate an immune response to CSP.

However, the EAT-2 gene-adjuvant stimulated the immune system in a different way, and Amalfitano and his team were able to increase the ability of the immune system to respond to CSP to a level that surpassed currently available malaria vaccine systems.

"The results were surprising, but we were able to hit our goal eventually," he said. "This research will help us as we create a viable vaccine. While the way that rEA is trying to stimulate the immune system may not be the best way for malaria, we did come up with an alternative adjuvant to effectively target the parasite."

Amalfitano said the next step is to see if researchers can prevent malaria in animal models using the EAT-2 gene-adjuvant: "Then we can take the lessons learned and really go forward and do what's necessary to feel confident to begin human trials."

2 Americans among 19 dead in Nepal plane crash

KATMANDU?? A plane carrying tourists to view Mount Everest crashed while attempting to land in Nepal on Sunday, killing all 19 people on board, including two U.S. citizens, officials said.

The turboprop plane belonging to Buddha Air was carrying 13 foreign tourists, three Nepalese passengers and three crew members when it crashed in Bisankunarayan village, just a few miles south of the capital, Katmandu.

Rewant Kuwar, an official at Katmandu's international airport rescue office, said that 18 bodies were pulled out of the plane's wreckage, and that another victim died later after being rushed to a hospital.

Tourism Secretary Ganeshraj Joshi said that among the foreigners who died in the crash, two were U.S. citizens, 10 were Indian nationals and the other was Japanese.

Andy Lane, a U.S. State Department press officer, told NBC News that it was aware of the incident and was working with Nepal's government to get more information.

He said the State Department could not confirm the reports that two Americans were on board and died in the crash.

An eyewitness, Haribol Poudel, told Avenues Television that the plane had hit the roof of a house in the village and disintegrated into several pieces. No casualties were reported on the ground.

Poudel said it was foggy, and that visibility was very low in the mountainous area.

World's highest peaks
The Beechcraft 1900D plane ? manufactured by Raytheon Aircraft, now known as Hawker Beechcraft ? had taken the passengers to view Mount Everest and other high peaks and was returning to Katmandu.

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas Rangers are AL West champions again.

Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre hit long home runs and Craig Gentry had an inside-the-park homer in a 5-3 victory over Seattle on Friday night. About two hours later, the Rangers had their second consecutive division title after the Los Angeles Angels lost to Oakland.

The regular Friday night fireworks show went on as usual after the Rangers (91-66) finished their game.

Fans were then invited to stick around and watch the Angels on the stadium's large video screen. Several thousand stayed and many of the Rangers players sat on the field with their families.

When the Athletics' 3-1 victory was done, eliminating Los Angeles from the West race, the Rangers celebrated on their own field more than 1,400 miles away by spraying ginger ale on each other and some of the fans. That was reminiscent of last year, when they did that in deference to Hamilton's well-documented substance abuse problems.

Rangers fans clapped and cheered on each of the Angels' outs in the bottom of the ninth. Many of the players disappeared into the dugout when the second out was made, then charged out after the final out wearing AL West championship T-shirts while fireworks filled the sky again ? this time in celebration.

It is the fifth division title for Texas, which last year went to its first World Series.

"It's great. Now we have the opportunity to win a World Series," said Michael Young, the team's longest-tenured player in his 11th season. "It's been incredible so far. We're looking forward to the next step."

When David DeJesus hit a solo homer for Oakland in the top of the ninth inning, fans at Rangers Ballpark erupted in cheers. Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus then took a home run trot and slid into home surrounded by many of his teammates.

Before retreating to the clubhouse for a more traditional celebration, Texas players ran in a group down the left-field corner and then walked along the edge of the seating area sharing the moment with fans. Last year, the Rangers were in Oakland when they clinched the division title.

"This kind of stuff never gets old," said a goggles-wearing Young in the middle of the champagne-spraying celebration. "It's a group of guys who worked so hard all season long for an opportunity to get to the postseason. We have five games left. We know we're in. It's been an incredible journey so far."

Division championship T-shirts and caps were already available for fans to buy before leaving Rangers Ballpark.

"We was committed to each other," manager Ron Washington said. "We knew we had, we knew what we had to do because we've been through it before. Now we're back (in the playoffs) and we get another opportunity."

Matt Harrison (14-9) worked six innings for the Rangers.

Gentry hit a liner to left-center in the fourth that went to the wall after splitting the gap between two outfielders. Left fielder Mike Carp and center fielder Trayvon Robinson both made diving attempts to catch the ball, Robinson a few feet behind Carp.

"Right when it got past them, no shot. He's just too fast," Young said. "Adrian and I were actually in the video room. The second we saw them both dive, we started sprinting to the dugout because we knew Craig was probably going to be there before we would."

They barely made it back to the bench in time.

The speedy Gentry initially wasn't even running full speed, and made a stutter-step rounding first base before realizing the ball was rolling to the wall. He then took off and scored standing for his first career homer (in 176 at-bats over 93 games).

It was the first inside-the-park homer for the Rangers since Nelson Cruz at Oakland on Sept. 4, 2006. Cruz was on base when Gentry got his. Washington even was able to retrieve the ball for Gentry.

That made it 5-0 and chased rookie left-hander Anthony Vasquez (1-5), who gave up three homers and seven hits over 3 1-3 innings.

"I had to keep the ball down. They were ready to hit fastballs. It was up and I was behind. They can take advantage of that," Vasquez said. "It's all about relaxing and getting confidence going, trusting what got you here."

Maryland man pleads guilty over child pornography (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The son of a government chemist charged in an insider trading case pleaded guilty on Thursday to an unrelated charge of possessing several child pornography that included hundreds of graphic sexual images.

Andrew Liang, 26, pleaded guilty in a federal court in Maryland to the one count of child pornography possession for downloading at least nine videos, some of which he obtained from Japanese Internet sites.

The videos included more than 600 visual images of sexually explicit conduct involving children ranging in age from 4 to under 18, according to the plea agreement and statement of facts filed in federal court.

Liang and his father, Cheng Yi Liang, have also been charged with engaging in insider trading with information from the Food and Drug Administration about upcoming drug approvals, making at least $2.27 million from trades.

Securities regulators have said there were more trades and that the father earned more than $3.77 million in profits and avoided losses.

The two have also been close to reaching plea agreements in the insider trading case as well, court records have said previously.

Depending on Andrew Liang's criminal history, he could face anywhere from four years and three months to a maximum of 10 years in prison on the child pornography charge. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

He is due to be sentenced on December 9.

UK to pay victims over 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre (AP)

DUBLIN ? Britain said Thursday it will offer compensation payments to the families of people killed and wounded on Bloody Sunday, a nearly 40-year-old massacre by British paratroopers in Northern Ireland that fueled Irish Catholic support for the IRA.

Thirteen people were killed and 14 wounded on Jan. 30, 1972, in Londonderry when the soldiers opened fire on a Catholic crowd demonstrating against Britain's detention without trial of Irish Republican Army suspects. Britain compounded local fury by hastily ruling that the soldiers, none of whom were wounded, were responding to IRA attacks and targeting gunmen.

Last year, Prime Minister David Cameron apologized after a 12-year investigation found that the soldiers were not under attack and fired without justification on unarmed civilians, many of whom were fleeing or aiding wounded.

Britain's Defense Ministry confirmed Thursday it has written to lawyers representing the Londonderry victims' families seeking terms for financial payments. It offered no details of potential payouts.

"We acknowledge the pain felt by these families for nearly 40 years, and that members of the armed forces acted wrongly. For that, the government is deeply sorry," the ministry said in a statement.

Peter Madden, a Belfast lawyer who represents many of the victims' families, said negotiations would open soon with the British government to put a price both on the lives lost and maimed and on the damage caused to victims' reputations by the British Army's "shameful allegations" that they were armed IRA members.

But some families immediately rejected any offer of financial compensation, stressing they want criminal prosecutions of those who opened fire. Nobody has ever been charged over the 13 killings.

"It is repulsive. Offensive. Not now, nor at any time will I accept money," said Linda Nash, whose 19-year-old brother William was shot fatally through the chest. "I've already told my legal team I want to go forward with prosecutions."

Nash noted that Britain in the early 1970s had offered her mother a cursory compensation payment of 250 pounds, about $625 at the time. "She didn't take it then and I will be doing the same," she said.

Madden said most families involved received "derisory and wholly inappropriate" payments from Britain in 1974, but that would have no bearing on the upcoming negotiations.

The Bloody Sunday Inquiry, authorized by former Prime Minister Tony Blair in the immediate build-up to the Good Friday peace accord of 1998, was empowered to find the truth behind the British Army's worst act of violence in Northern Ireland. Families of the dead had demanded such a probe for decades.

The investigation led by English judge Lord Saville produced a 5,000-page report based on evidence from 921 witnesses, 2,500 written statements and 60 volumes of written evidence. It cost nearly 200 million pounds ($300 million).

Saville gave the ex-paratroopers, now in their 60s and 70s, broad protections from criminal charges as well as anonymity in the witness box, citing the risk that IRA dissidents might target them in retaliation.

However legal experts say wiggle room remains for prosecutions and, more likely, civil lawsuits against the retired soldiers, particularly those who were found to have lied during their testimony.

With a steamed vegetable and / or salad , which can be used for easy and quick, healthy dinner for your family. Forget fast food. It really can be easy to feed your family at home. CHICKEN

(or turkey!) CRISIS CASSEROLE
3 cup diced or shredded turkey (or chicken)
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom pieces
1 / 2 cup finely chopped celery
1 / 4 cup chopped onion
1 / 2 teaspoon seasoning poultry
2 cans cream of mushroom soup (1 low-sodium, low fat)
1 cup milk
lowfat 1 / 2 cup chow mein noodles Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine turkey, pieces of mushrooms, chopped celery, chopped onion and poultry seasoning. In a small bowl, combine the two cans of soup milk with a wire whisk.

Spray 2-quart casserole with cooking spray. Pour turkey mixture into the pan. Pour the broth and milk mixture over turkey mixture. Chow Mein noodles sprinkled on top.
