Elmo is a calming voice for kids after storm

Victoria Will / AP file

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Superstorm Sandy made for a frightening time even for the bravest adults in the storm's path. So just imagine how scary the devastating storm was for children who lived through it first hand or even those who simply saw the images of destruction on their televisions. For kids, no amount of statistics or estimated recovery times really explain the weather event or provide comfort in its wake.

Parents have no doubt been working overtime to soothe their affected tykes, and now they have some help from a voice every child trusts.

On Tuesday morning, "Sesame Street's" Elmo visited Brian Lehrer's WNYC's radio show and spoke directly to his young audience. And as it turns out, the Muppet is a hurricane pro, having been through a scary storm on "Sesame Street" in the past.

"Well, the wind started blowing really bad, and we had to put tape on windows and stuff," he explained of the episode. He even had to help his pal Big Bird put his nest back together after the storm destroyed it.

Joining Elmo and host Lehrer was Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, the vice president of education and research for Sesame Workshop. She explained that the episode was created long before Sandy or even Hurricane Katrina. It was meant to help parents if their kids should ever face a similar storm.

"'Sesame Street' is based on a whole child curriculum, and so we focus not only on the cognitive skills, but social and emotional skills of children," Truglio said. "We wanted to have a community show like this where we could model for parents tips -- so that we could model how you prepare for a storm and how you get through the storm with activities ... and keeping your child calm and safe."

As for Elmo, he took a question from a fan who wanted to know if he was scared on Monday night, as Hurricane Sandy hit his hometown.

"Yeah, but Elmo was with his mommy and daddy, so Elmo asked a lot of questions and learned a lot about what was happening," he assured.

His main question of the night was, "Will the wind ever stop blowing?" And he shared the answer he got.

"The windows were moving and stuff and they said, 'Yes, everything would calm down and be OK."

And so it was for Elmo, and hopefully it was for all of his young fans, too.

Thousands gather at City Hall to celebrate Giants

By PAUL ELIAS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - They came from all corners of the region and screamed louder with each strike and every out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the San Francisco Giants closed in on a second championship in three years Sunday.

The 2,000 fans assembled to watch the game on a Jumbotron a park across from City Hall grew in numbers and volume throughout the chilly and foggy night, exploding in unison with a roar with the final out.

Fans across the city left their televisions and raced into the streets, where they were greeted by diners and bar patrons who raced outside to celebrate as well. Car horns blared long into the night and revelers blocked traffic in front of popular watering holes around town.

At Polk and Bush streets in the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they watched the game on the Jumbotron.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15 and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game and the park was awash with revelers, strangers hugging strangers and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes being freely passed through the crowd despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco," said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Bars of all stripes, from the Castro to Chinatown were packed with supporters of the beloved Giants.

So-called pedicabs whisked fans down roads blocked to traffic and revelers enjoyed a New Year's Eve-like freedom to roam up and down streets usually clogged with traffic.

Small fires broke out in trash cans here and there, but the violence and vandalism appeared to have been kept to a minimum a few hours after the last pitch.

Shortly before midnight, police said the street celebration was still going.

"We're watching out for any major flareups and fires," said police spokesman officer Carlos Manfredi. "We want to maintain public safety at all times, and don't want to put first responders in any danger."

He said police were responding to certain hot spots but had no reports of serious problems. No arrest figures were available.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced the ticker-tape parade would be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., down Market Street to Civic Center Plaza

"The rain in Detroit couldn't dampen the drive, talent and determination of the San Francisco Giants team tonight. Once again, the Giants brought our City together as we all cheered on our hometown heroes to another remarkable World Series victory," he said.

The 2010 parade drew hundreds of thousands fans, who lined the streets of downtown San Francisco. The parade ends at City Hall.

The party started early in Civic Center park, with many showing up hours before the 5 p.m. game on a nice Indian Summer day in San Francisco, wearing shorts and t-shirts. The blankets and sweaters came out when the sun went down and the fog rolled in, but the chill didn't damper the enthusiasm. Many in the crowd were carrying brooms in hope of the series sweep that came to be.

"We they were going to sweep," said Elizabeth Choy-Lau, 32, of San Francisco. She and her husband were carrying brooms.

"There was no doubt," said Steve Lau, 30.

The city's ubiquitous food trucks did a brisk business and drummers of all types beat their instruments throughout the game.

"Where else in the world do you want to be tonight," replied Dave Wormald of Toronto. Wormald and two other colleagues were in town for a business meeting and were watching the game at their hotel when they decided to embark for City Hall.

"This is the place to be," said Jim Vliet, Wormald's colleague.

Earth Climate Change Models Work for Mars, Too

Climate change models used to analyze changing conditions on Earth can be applied to at least one other planet in our solar system ? Mars, a new study reveals.

Earth-based computer models can predict the age and location of glacial features on the Red Planet, scientists say. This extra-planetary generalization suggests that climate change models aren't so as inaccurate as they're sometimes portrayed, said study researcher William Hartmann, a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson.

"Some public figures imply that modeling of global climate is 'junk science,' but if climate models can explain features observed on other planets, then the models must have at least some validity," Hartmann said in a statement.

Hartmann and his colleagues presented the new Mars climate research today (Oct. 16) at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences in Reno, Nev.

Today's Martian landscape is not known for its glaciers, but previous research has shown that during some periods of Mars' history, the planet's rotational axis has tilted more than 45 degrees. When this happens, climate models suggest that the polar ice cap tilted toward the sun evaporates, lingering in the atmosphere as water vapor and increasing the chances of snowfall in the hemisphere tilted away from the sun.

This last happened on Mars 5 million to 20 million years ago. (Nowadays, it still snows on Mars, but the microscopic snowflakes are made of carbon dioxide, not water.)

Planetary researchers have since used global climate models built for Earth but tweaked for Martian conditions to study Mars' glacial history. They've found indications of glacial features in a 40-mile-wide (64 kilometers) crater called "Greg" in the mid-latitude southern region of the planet. The surface layer of those features would have formed at the same time as the last extreme tilt, PSI scientists found. [Photos of Mars: The Amazing Red Planet]

Now, the researchers have combined four different measurements of Martian geology and climate, including climate predictions, the presence of glaciers, the ages of glacial surface layers and radar measurements of ice. The measurements and models are all consistent with one another, the researchers found.

"The bottom line is that the global climate models indicate that the last few intense deposits of ice occurred about 5 million to 15 million years ago, virtually centered on Greg crater, and that's just where the spacecraft data reveal glaciers whose surface layers date from that time," Hartmann said. "If global climate models indicate specific concentration of ice-rich features where and when we actually see them on a distant planet, then climate modeling should not be sarcastically dismissed. Our results provide an important, teachable refutation of the attacks on climate science on our home planet."

Tame US prices, more confident builders aid growth

FILE - In this Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, file photo, workers form a large spindle at Solmet Technologies in Canton, Ohio. U.S. industrial production increased only modestly in September, held back by weak growth in factory output. The August decline partly reflected precautionary shutdowns before Hurricane Isaac hit the Gulf Coast. (AP Photo/Mark Duncan)

(AP) ? The outlook for the U.S. economy brightened a little Tuesday after reports that consumer prices stayed tame and homebuilder confidence rose to the highest level in six years.

A third report showed factory output grew only modestly in September, a reminder that the economy is still weak.

Low inflation could give consumers even more incentive to spend at a time when their confidence is at a five-year high. That could boost growth and help lift American manufacturers out from their slump.

The economy remains the top issues for voters with just three weeks left before Election Day. It will be front and center Tuesday night when President Barack Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney meet at New York's Hofstra University for the second of three debates.

Tuesday's data showed:

? The consumer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 0.6 percent in September, the Labor Department said. The increase was driven by higher gas prices. When excluding gas and food costs, prices rose just 0.1 percent. Overall prices have risen just 2 percent in the 12 months that ended in September, in line with the Federal Reserve's inflation target.

? The National Association of Home Builders said its survey of builder sentiment rose to a reading of 41 this month, the highest level since June 2006. The index is still below 50, which indicates negative sentiment about the market. But it has steadily climbed over the past year from a reading of 17, further evidence of a slow but steady housing recovery.

? The Federal Reserve said that output at factories, mines and utilities rose 0.4 percent in September after a sharp decline in August. Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, edged up only 0.2 percent last month. The report also noted that factory out fell in the July-September quarter. That marked the first quarterly decline since the spring of 2009, when the country was still in recession.

The report on low inflation contributed to a second straight day of strong gains on Wall Street. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 127 points to close at 13,551, its biggest gain since Sept. 13. Broader indexes also gained.

Modest inflation leaves consumers with more money to spend. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

The small increase in prices prompted the government to raise Social Security benefits 1.7 percent next year for 56 million recipients. The government increases benefits each year if prices rise. The boost was one of the smallest since automatic adjustments began in 1975.

Still, elderly Americans and other recipients will have a little more buying power next year. Social Security payments for retired workers average $1,237 a month, or about $14,800 a year. The increase is equal to roughly $21 more a month.

Consumers may also be inclined to step up spending if their home values keep rising.

The homebuilder survey showed that sales and builders' outlook over the next six months remained unchanged from September's improved levels. And a measure of buyer traffic rose to its highest level since April 2006.

Americans are buying homes again, pushing up sales and prices after a six-year slump. The recovery has been modest and housing has a long way back to full health. But the steady increases suggest housing is no longer weighing on growth.

The same can't be said for manufacturing, which has slumped since spring.

Europe's debt crisis and slower growth in China and other emerging markets have hurt demand for American exports. Many companies have also held back on purchases of equipment and machinery. They are waiting to see if Congress can reach a deal before the end of the year to avert sharp tax increases and spending cuts.

The September growth in factory output was an encouraging sign that manufacturing may be starting to rebound. A separate survey from the Institute for Supply Management also showed manufacturing activity expanded for the first time since May, buoyed by new orders and hiring.

A more confident consumer could help revitalize sluggish factory growth.

Consumer sentiment rose to a five-year high in October, according to a survey by the University of Michigan. And Americans stepping up their spending at retail businesses in September for the second straight month, buying more cars and iPhones.

Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays, said the increase in consumer spending should translate into more factory orders and stronger production in the coming months.

Still, most economists said the weak overseas growth should drag on U.S. manufacturing for some time.

"There is still little evidence to suggest that a sustained upturn in the manufacturing sector is just around the corner," Erik Johnson, U.S. economist at IHS Global Insight, said in a note to clients.

Member of Jerry Lee Lewis band killed in shootout

(AP) ? Musician B.B. Cunningham Jr., a member of Jerry Lee Lewis' band, was killed in a Memphis shootout early Sunday, police said.

Police said Cunningham was working as a security guard at an apartment complex on Memphis' southeast side, when he heard a gunshot at the neighboring Cherry Crest apartments and went to investigate about 2 a.m., according to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/RJ1NUs).

Police didn't provide details, but they said when officers arrived, both the 70-year-old Cunningham and a 16-year-old boy were found dead from gunshot wounds.

The teenager has not been identified. Calls to police by The Associated Press were not returned.

When contacted at his home in Washington, D.C., Bill Cunningham confirmed his brother was killed.

Byny Garcia, who lives in a unit across the courtyard from where the shooting took place, said Cunningham was well-liked.

"He'd take care of the old people and the Spanish kids," Garcia said. "He was a good person. We don't feel good at this moment."

Born Blake Baker Cunningham Jr., the keyboardist and singer established a national reputation in 1965 as a member of the touring version of Ronnie and the Daytonas, known for the song "G.T.O."

That band eventually became the Hombres, which scored a chart hit with "Let It All Hang Out" in 1967.

After the Hombres' career slowed, Cunningham went to work behind the scenes at the famed Sounds of Memphis Studios. In 1971, he moved to Los Angeles where he served as chief engineer at Independent Recorders, working with the likes of Billy Joel, Elton John, and Lou Rawls.

Cunningham ultimately returned to Memphis a few years later and launched his own studio.

He had been a member of Lewis' band since 1997. His solo album, "Hangin' In," was released in 2003.

Advice On Increasing Your Website's Search Engine Rankings ...

You can market your site through paid ads and articles, but these will only get you so far. The above mentioned methods may work; however, by utilizing proper SEO, an owner can attain prime location in search results. Use the tips that are in this article and you can start to raise the profile of your website.

You should leave informative and helpful comments on relevant blogs. Links accompanied by substantive content are more likely to be allowed by blog owners. You should make sure you leave links that are on relevant sites and not places where your links don?t apply because you want to add something to a site, not throw people off. It?s easy to leave comments (and links) on blogs if you know what you?re talking about.

Your first priority when trying to get a higher ranking should be to write great, informative, and totally unique content. To get a lot of traffic, you?ll need to offer unique content that can?t be found elsewhere. If your site?s content is intriguing and informative, people will return frequently to read your newest updates.

Adding a site map to your website is a highly important search engine optimization step. Search engine spiders will crawl the site more easily with a site map in place. A large site might require more than one site map. You should generally limit the number of links on any given site map to 100.

Have patience with your search engine optimization efforts. Everyone is excited to see results right away after all of their effort. Creating and maintaining a successful website requires a true commitment of your time and devotion. You must continue to work hard even if you do not immediately see the results that you want. Using common keywords and linking to other sites can also make your site more visible.

It is important to constantly release new content on your website. Set a goal for yourself, and follow through on it. Search engines recognize websites that constantly update their content as being more informative and up-to-date than those who don?t. As a result, these sites are indexed more often. If you want your website to have a high page rank, you must have a constant flow of new content.

Search engines are the most popular portals between online businesses and online consumers. Some businesses do not know that if your ranking is poor, it may be difficult for customers to find their site, even if they know the company name.

Think about what a person might enter into a search engine to find a site like yours, and make sure those phrases appear multiple times in your site?s content. Add keywords to both your title tag and main content, but keep your keyword density to a sane level to avoid getting the dreaded ?keyword stuffer? label.

If you want to increase your SEO, try using off-site links that will bring visitors to other quality websites. Quality and reputation are very important aspects of linking. Search engines give more weight to off-site links that are relevant, than to internal links connecting various pages of your website. If you can negotiate a return link to your website in exchange for linking to another person?s site, do so, as this will impact your rank even more.

What you put in your title tags is important. For the best results, make use of your chosen keywords. Link all of the pages on your site together by putting the same title tag on every page. To better connect everything, you should include your company?s name at the end of the title link as well. If you don?t have a famous company name, customers are more likely to search for you product rather than your name.

Marketing online is all about search engine optimization (SEO). Increase your search engine rankings by strategically placing keywords and phrases. This increases site traffic because of better search results.

An important SEO tip is to keep an eye on your search rankings. Take a proactive approach, and find out how search engine optimization techniques are working for you. Monitor your results to learn if it is working or not. Use Alexa or your Google toolbar to see how your page is ranking.

Keyword density is important when optimizing an internet page for various search engines. Do not include more than 20 percent of keywords on your page.

Develop a site map to make it easier for the search engines to index your pages. A site map is also known as the navigation bar. This part of your web site will let search engines know how many pages your web site has and what each one contains. Even a small site can have a huge impact with a site map, in how a search engine will rank it.

Incorporate one or two of your keywords into your domain name. Picking a keyword that people search for as your URL will ensure that your website is easier to find in search engines. Keep in mind that people will find your website via multiple methods like search engines or backlinks, not just from advertisements.

If your website includes audio and video content, you should consider including detailed transcripts. Your audio and video content will be better understood by search engines if you use transcripts.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People want to hear from important members of the company.

You might actually be able to get some traffic to your site while your site is ranked on the back pages, but your traffic would exponentially increase as soon as you started to implement the proper SEO tactics. By using the tips you?ve just read in this article, you can start to raise the profile of your

Acer announces Aspire 5600U and 7600U all-in-ones, coming this month for $1,000 and up

For the most part, Acer blew its Windows 8 load back at IFA and Computex, but as we're learning now, the company still had a handful of goodies left to announce. The outfit just introduced a pair of touch-friendly, Win 8-ready all-in-one desktops, the 23-inch Aspire 5600U and the 27-inch Aspire 7600U. As you can see in the press shots, the design here is fairly minimal, with an edge-to-edge display, a transparent panel at the bottom of the bezel and a thin frame measuring less than 1.4 inches thick. The machines can also tilt so that they lie at a nearly face-up 80-degree angle.

In either case, you'll get a 1080p panel, with 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Either machine, too, can be configured with Acer's InstantOn technology, which promises 1.5-second resume times. The 27-incher has a discrete NVIDIA GT640M GPU with 2GB of video memory, however, while the 23-inch model is stuck with integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics. Further, while they both have Core i5 CPUs, the 5600U has a 2.4GHz 3110M, while the 7600U has a 3210M, clocked at 2.5GHz (overclockable to 3.1GHz). The 7600U also has two HDMI inputs, whereas the 5600U has one. Finally, the U5600 will be available in touch- and non-touch-enabled configurations, while the 7600U will be touch-only. Both will be available this month, with the 23-incher starting at $1,000 for touch-enabled models, and $1,150 for touchscreen variants. The 7600U will sell for quite a bit more: $1,900.

'Northeastern literature is highly neglected' - Sevensisters Post

Author Tabish Khair, in an interview with Sparsh Sharma, speaks about his writing career and? the literary scene in India and its Northeast

Born and educated in Bihar?s Gaya, Tabish Khair is a poet, journalist, critic, educator and novelist. His works include Where Parallel Lines Meet, Babu Fictions: Alienation in Indian English Novels, The Bus Stopped, Filming: A Love Story, The Glum Peacock, Man of Glass, The Thing About Thugs, and The Gothic, Postcolonialism and Otherness. He has co-edited Other Routes: 1500 Years of African and Asian Travel Writing.

His most recent books are How to Fight Islamist Terror from the Missionary Position and the co-authored Reading Literature Today. His works have been translated into nearly a dozen languages.

Winner of the All India Poetry Prize, Khair?s novels have been shortlisted for the Encore Award (UK), Crossword Vodafone Fiction Prize and Hindu Literature Prize (India), Man Asian Literature Prize (Hong Kong) and for major translation prizes in Denmark and France.?

    • H ow was the journey from Gaya, B ihar, to Aarhus, Denmark, of a prodigious Indian, now a global literary figure?

It was a hard journey, and it has not ended for me, and never will, because I see myself as a ?small town cosmopolitan? writer. This makes it difficult for me to accept some of the perspectives of many metropolitan writers or editors, and leaves me without the kind of powerful patronage that has become essential to m ajor literary success these days. But I am happy trekking on my own journey, and I have luckily had a fair bit of success on my own too.

    • Some of the remarkable memories of this long journey of hard work and commercial/critical success?

I will save those for my memoirs, if I ever write one, or (what is more likely) I will fashion them into fiction. But one strand that runs through my memories is an awareness of these supposedly peripheral spaces and a suspicion of worldly success, including my own. I feel lucky. I know that many others with just as much to give will not be so lucky. And hence I feel humbled.

    • How was the initial reception in the West of your writing in Indian English?

My novels, The Bus Stopped and Filming?, were published to good reviews in The Independent, The Guardian, The Times, New Statesman, etc., so I guess the reaction was very favourable. Personally, though, I do not much care for British or American commendation; I am happy if I get it, just as I am happy to get a perceptive review in France or Portugal. But finally I am writing for South Asians first, and the rest of world (which just includes the UK and the USA) after that. I think it is very sad that Indian English literary reputations have to depend so much on ?Western?, particularly British, commendation.

    • Any frustrating moments in the illustrious literary career?

This is a line in which the frustrations usually outstrip the satisfactions: it is a constant struggle, in every possible way. To write is to struggle, and to know that you can only improve, not achieve perfection.

    • Why do you write in English? Why not your first language?

Unfortunately, English is my first language. I grew up speaking Hindi, Urdu and English, but reading and writing almost exclusively in English. I went to a missionary school, and learnt to write and read English first, and was taught all subjects via English. I can still read English much faster than Hindi (which I read well), and I can hardly read Urdu, though I speak it well enough. For every 50 books I have read in English, I have read one in Hindi, and one in some other language. So Hindi-Urdu-English (Hindustani?) might be my mother tongue, but English is my first language.

    • How can one capture the street idiom and the essence of an Indian scene in English or any second international language?

It is a problem: Once you write in English about India, where most people do not speak English or do not speak it from choice, you are faced with a number of limitations of this sort. You can ignore them or you can fashion your art to grapple with them, creatively and honestly. I do the latter. Fiction, in any language, is an art, so you have ways out: there are limitations and possibilities, and you need to work with both. You can see it as a drawback, or you can consider it a challenge.

    • Which one is more sexy ? journalism or creative writing?

Both have their attractions for me.

    • You were also a journalist earlier in your rich career. Can journalists make a neat crossover to literary fiction?

I was basically a writer who went into journalism for the experience and to earn a livelihood. I have never been anything other than a writer in my heart, though I have done many other jobs, ranging from journalism and university teaching to dishwashing and house painting. I do not come from the sort of family where you could choose not to work and simply be a ?writer?.

    • As a Danish citizen, your experience of Denmark ? and of Europe?

I am not a Danish citizen. I refuse to apply for a Danish passport and I still hold only an Indian passport. This is important for me, for personal, political and cultural reasons, though not for narrowly nationalistic ones.

    • Who are the formative literary influences on you?

I never had a model I tried to imitate, but there were many writers I found very exciting: Dostoevsky, Gogol, Chekov, RK Narayan, Manto, Premchand, Kafka, George Eliot and Victor Hugo. That is in my earlier years, up to high school; later on I discovered others: Italo Svevo, Ismat Chughtai, Anne Carson, Mahasweta Devi, Stendhal, Roberto Bolano?

    • How do you view Urdu as a medium of literary expression?

Major language of literary creativity; it is a pity I have trouble reading the script and have to read it in translation or in the Devnagari script.

    • T he writers in Indian English t hat still fascinate you.

RK Narayan, Attia Hosain, Anita Desai, Arun Kolatkar and then certain specific books by Raja Rao, Shashi Deshpande, Amitav Ghosh, Siddhartha Deb, Salman Rushdie, Pankaj Mishra, Khushwant Singh, Nissim Ezekiel, Kamala Das, Keki N Daruwalla, Manu Joseph, Githa Hariharan, some others? I might not like all their books, but these are some of the writers who have written at least one book that I found extraordinarily good, and in some cases more than one book.

    • What are the reasons that young Indians are deserting India for foreign shores?

Money. Opportunity. The hard sell of the ?West?.

    • Are we becoming less tolerant and more communal?

Hard to tell, but I do feel that we are becoming much more impatient with each other and less capable of listening, and this can translate into a lack of tolerance.

    • Your philosophy of life as a reputed global citizen?

I don?t know if I am one or have one. The one benchmark I have is this: ?Any justified claim to rights has to be a universal claim, but we are oppressed only in our particularities.? I try to remember this.

    • What is the main purpose of literary writing in a changed context of globalised world?

For me, literary writing is always a bid to use words to explore the various tracts of silence.

    • Your view of Chetan Bhagat and his kind of success?

Delighted for him. It must be good to make that sort of money. Not what I set out to do as a writer, but why get all high and mighty if someone else wants to do so?

    • What is your opinion on the writing in English from Northeast India?

Highly neglected. But that is true to the region in general.

    • Do you think writers have convincingly portrayed the region?s ethno-cultural hopes and aspirations, and the conflicts and contradictions the people there live with?

I don?t think writers have a brief to represent a people or place; they might choose to do so, but they may choose to do something else. What they cannot avoid doing, however, is to engage with life. So the question to ask is this: have writers engaged fully or deeply or interestingly with life? Every reader has to answer this question on his or her own.

    • How do you see the future for northeastern literature?

No idea. I don?t pretend to be a prophet. But I hope it gets more visibility.

Philippine peace deal seen as blow to terrorists

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Hunted by U.S.-backed Filipino troops in 2005, Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani and other al-Qaida-linked militants sought refuge in the mountainous stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the largest Muslim rebel group in the southern Philippines.

But the rebels turned them away, afraid that harboring extremists would scuttle their peace talks with the government. The following year, Janjalani ? among the most-wanted terrorist suspects in Southeast Asia ? was killed by troops in another jungle area.

The rebels' rejection of Janjalani, which was reported at the time by military and police intelligence officials, shows the potential of harnessing the main Moro insurgents in fighting extremism and preventing their vast strongholds from serving as one of the last remaining refuges of al-Qaida-affiliated militants, who have been clobbered by years of crackdowns across Southeast Asia.

Philippine officials hope a preliminary peace deal the government recently clinched with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front will eventually turn the 11,000-strong insurgent group into a formidable force against the remnants of the Abu Sayyaf and other radicals, including several Indonesian and Malaysian militants believed to be taking cover in the southern Mindanao region.

"We can wage battle with the MILF," Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said. "This will really isolate groups like the Abu Sayyaf."

The United States, Britain and Australia, aware of the emerging peace agreement's potential counterterrorism dividends, were among the first to praise the framework accord with the rebels announced Oct. 7 by President Benigno Aquino III. It will be formally signed in Manila on Monday.

"Foreign governments have supported the peace process partly because of counterterrorism policies," Bryony Lau of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group said. They also worried about poor governance and high levels of poverty that have plagued the insurgency-affected regions, he said.

While the Moro rebel group has cut ties with foreign extremists to safeguard peace talks, "there may well still be individual ... commanders with continuing ties," Lau said, adding that "the framework agreement increases the incentives for the MILF leadership to ensure that their members are not harboring such people."

Under the deal, the Moro rebel group committed to deactivate its armed guerrilla units "beyond use" when both sides have finalized an agreement on Muslim autonomy.

A final pact could be reached in three years, officials and the rebels say. One option is to integrate qualified guerrillas into a police force that would secure the new Muslim autonomous region, to be called Bangsamoro. The rest of the insurgents, they say, could return to civilian life once they lay down their firearms.

The Malaysian-brokered talks, aiming to wean the Moro guerrillas from foreign and local extremists and outlaws, led to a 2002 agreement on a government-rebel joint action group that was designed for the insurgents to help interdict and capture terrorists in their areas. Under the agreement, the rebels have fed information and helped solve several ransom kidnappings in the south.

Still, military and police intelligence reports have showed that some Moro rebel commanders continued to provide refuge or clandestinely supported foreign militants linked to extremist groups.

Ameril Umbra Kato, commander of one of the Moro group's largest guerrilla units, had long been suspected of supporting Indonesian and Malaysian extremists even before he broke off from the main group last year, partly due to his rejection of the peace talks. Among his known followers is Abdul Basit Usman, a Filipino bomb maker and trainer with links to the Indonesian-based Jemaah Islamiyah militant network and a suspect in several deadly bomb attacks in the south.

Washington has offered a $1 million bounty for Usman's capture or killing.

Kato's forces attacked several army camps and outposts in August in two southern provinces. As army troops bombarded Kato's forces, Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrillas stayed within their community-like encampments ? marked by green flags to prevent them from accidentally being drawn in the fighting.

Later, about 3,000 Moro insurgents surrounded their breakaway colleagues and forced the hard-line leaders to sign a pledge to indefinitely stop attacks and give the talks a chance, according to Muslim rebel negotiator Mohagher Iqbal.

Abu Mujahid, a former key Abu Sayyaf commander, said he had joined combat training organized by Moro Islamic Liberation Front commanders in their rural strongholds in the late 1980, along with Jemaah Islamiyah and Arab militants. Mujahid was captured years ago and has been helping authorities pursue Abu Sayyaf gunmen.

"Some MILF commanders have worked with foreign jihadists, so if they become the authority someday, that's clearly a big operational setback for the jihadists," Mujahid said, referring to Indonesian and other extremists. "This will limit where they can go, who they can talk with. It will almost be like back to zero."

But untangling the four-decade Muslim insurgency is fraught with a recent history of failures.

A 1996 autonomy deal the government signed with the largest rebel group at the time, the Moro National Liberation Front, led to the integration of 7,500 of an estimated 30,000 guerrillas into the Philippine army and police.

The integrated former rebels played key roles in successful army and police counterterrorism assaults. But the other rebels did not disarm and, while many laid low, they were still a threat. An unspecified number joined the Abu Sayyaf and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which broke off in 1984 from the Moro National Liberation Front.

In a region that has long grappled with a volatile mix of crushing poverty, huge numbers of illegal firearms, clan wars and weak law enforcement, Muslim unrest and extremists continue to be a concern.

Shifting the Moro Islamic Liberation Front from a major national security problem to a strategic ally would be the biggest boost in efforts to tame the insurgency.

"There are a lot of problems we must face," Moro front's vice chairman, Ghadzali Jaafar, said Saturday, adding that concerns include securing the new Muslim-administered region to allow development.

"Before we were like sailing in a vast ocean without seeing the port," he said. "Now we can see where to dock."

Green Energy Investing Has Become A Nightmare - Business Insider

Renewable energy is the future, say environmentalists. But for green and ethical investors it has turned into a nightmare, with makers of wind and solar power systems among the worst-performing stocks in recent years.

Take Vestas, the Danish wind turbine maker. Early investors enjoyed sparkling returns, with shares leaping from 34 Danish kroner in 2003 to 698 in 2008 ? a 20-fold rise. But since then, beset by the loss of government subsidies, cost overruns, production delays and competition from China, the price has collapsed. Today it is trading at 35 kroner ? so someone investing in 2008 will have lost nearly 95% of their money.

In August Vestas revealed it had slumped into losses and shed another 1,400 jobs, bringing total redundancies for the year to more than 3,700. It had planned to construct a plant at Sheerness docks in Kent to supply turbines for expected deep-water North Sea windfarms, but this was axed in June.

Solar panel manufacturers have also burnt a hole in investors' pockets. Look at SunTech, the world's biggest maker of PV (photovoltaic) panels, based in Wuxi, China. Its private equity backers (notably Goldman Sachs) made a fortune when it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005, making well over 10 times their original investment. So did the people who bought at the initial share launch, with the shares shooting from $20 to $79 in late 2007. And today? They are changing hands at just 92 cents. First Solar, another one-time darling of Nasdaq, collapsed from $308 in April 2008 to $23 last week. Solar is an industry awash with overcapacity in China, falling prices and declining government subsidies.

Funds that specialise in renewable energy have fallen a long way short of expectations. Impax Environmental, an investment trust, has lost 20% over the past five years, while BlackRock New Energy investment trust has done even worse, falling 49.9% since 2007. It's a salutary reminder to avoid investment fads and bubbles.

Meanwhile, many "sin" stocks screened out by ethical investors have outperformed. At the turn of the century, in the midst of the "TMT" (technology, media and telecoms) stock market bubble, tobacco companies were the market's most unloved sector. Shares in British American Tobacco, makers of Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike and Pall Mall, were changing hands at 224p. Today they fetch ?31.93.

Libya police colonel targeted in assassination attempt

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A police car exploded on Saturday during a failed assassination attempt on a police colonel in the eastern city of Benghazi, a Libyan police official said.

The attack was the latest in a series of assassination attempts in Benghazi, the cradle of last year's uprising which ousted Muammar Gaddafi, and where U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed in a September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate.

Unknown suspects placed a home-made bomb under Colonel Mohammed Ben Haleem's car which was parked outside his house, police spokesman Majed al-Obeidi said.

"The colonel turned his engine on to warm up the car, then stepped back into the house to retrieve something. That's when the car exploded," he told Reuters.

Obeidi said the explosion in the central Benghazi neighborhood of al-Hadayeq caused no injuries or deaths.

Ben Haleem was a police colonel under Gaddafi and resumed his post in the new government after the uprising.

On August 10, gunmen shot dead Libyan army general Mohammed al-Fitori in Benghazi when he was leaving Friday prayers. The bullets were fired from a passing car.

Fitori had defected from Gaddafi's government during last year's revolt and later became head of ammunition and armament for the army.

In early September, a Libyan intelligence officer was killed and another wounded when their car exploded in Benghazi.

A bomb planted in the car, which belonged to one of the officers, was remotely detonated when the two got into the vehicle in a busy shopping district of the Mediterranean city.

Genny's or Soundstream Reference on midbass, sub and rearfill ...

    Hi,

As some people probably know, I'm a fan of Genesis amps and I have a couple of them myself, which doesn't mean I'm not open for something else... if it's just as good or better...

At the moment, my collection of Genesis amps is 4 Dual Mono's and 1 Compact Four.
I'm planning to use them like this:
    - 3 Dual Mono's on left+center+right mids+tweeters
    - 1 Dual Mono on sub
    - Compact Four on rear-fill + midbass

I know what you're thinking, and I totally agree: it's very strange to put only 2x55W on midbass while putting 6x150W on mids and tweeters and I'm planning to solve that in the future (when the budget allows it) by adding a Miniblock or Dual Mono to the system and create this:
    - 3 Dual Mono's on L+C+R mids+tweeters
    - Dual Mono on midbass
    - Miniblock/Dual-Mono on sub
    - Compact Four on rear-fill + ?????

But I started getting in doubt about this plan because of the cost of it, and because of an offer from a friend:
He's selling 2 Soundstream Reference 300's and 2 Soundstream Reference 200's for a price that is cheaper than a used Miniblock and only slightly more expensive than a used Dual Mono.
Just like the Genny's, they can be mounted in a row against eachother...

If I buy these, I can do:
    - 3 Dual Mono's on L+C+R mids+tweeters
    - SS 300 on midbass
    - SS 300 on sub
    - SS 200 on rear-fill
    - SS 200 on ???????
Meaning I'm not only keeping the budget for extra amps pretty much the same, I would also be able to sell a Dual Mono and the Compact Four and collect some cash if I wanted/had to...

-Aesthetically, both options can be done very nicely: 2 rows of 3 Genesis amps -vs- 1 row of Genesis + 1 row of Soundstream amps...
-Budget-wise: I would be better off by getting the Soundstreams...
-Heart-wise: I really love the classy bling of Genesis Series 3 amps...
-Sound-wise: I know Genesis is very neutral and I'm told those older Soundstream Reference amps have a warm sound, but how that will affect midbass/sub/rears...
-Reliability-wise: Genesis is known to be very reliable, I've heard and read those older Soundstreams can get really hot and blow fuses when driving (sub)bass-drivers, which is exactly what 2 of them would do in my install...

If I had the money, I'd just buy both and make some kind of system that allows me to swap amps easily every week, but unfortunately, life comes with a lot of other things that should be more important than caraudio and cost a lot of money too...

IT Service Management Software ? Gearing up for Global Challenges

Internet and Technology | Computers and Technology | * Written by Cruz Zachary | Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:08 | Word Count: 458

The aggressiveness competitive business environment has given rise to expansion of business and globalization. Further with increase in customer base, enterprises are also challenged to meet in the demands of a variety of customers.
