What did one chatbot say to the other chatbot? Quite a lot, actually -- but good luck making any sense out of it. That's what researchers from Cornell's Creative Machines Lab recently discovered, after pitting two bots against one another for a good ol' fashioned talk-off. It's all part of the lab's submission to this year's Loebner Prize Competition in Artificial Intelligence -- an event that awards $100,000 to the team whose computer programs can conduct the most human-like conversations. Unfortunately for Cornell's squad, their chatbots still have a long way to go before achieving conversational coherence, though they could easily get hired as anchors on most cable news networks. Throughout the course of their frenetic (and often snippy) discussion, one bot raised heady questions about God and existence, while the other boldly claimed to be a unicorn. Basically, they had the exact same conversation we used to have in our dorm rooms every night, at around 4 am. Watch it for yourself after the break. It's nothing short of sublime.

A Horse show is a judged exhibition of horses and ponies. Many different horse breeds and equestrian disciplines hold competitions worldwide, from local to the international levels. Most horse shows run from one to three days, sometimes longer for major, all-breed events or national and international championships in a given discipline or breed. Most shows consist of a series of different performances, called classes, wherein a group of horses with similar training or characteristics compete against one another for awards and, often, prize money.

The rules of the FEI govern competitions open to riders from all nations, including the Olympic games and the World Equestrian Games.

In the United Kingdom there is a distinct difference between ?horse competitions? such as dressage or eventing and horse shows. Horse shows provide an opportunity for riders and owners to exhibit their animals without taking part in any of the Olympic disciplines. Classes are divided into ridden and in-hand sections and there are many different classes for different horses and ponies. For example, there are classes for Mountain and moorland pony breeds, show hunters, show hacks, equitation, and various show pony classes. Many clubs hold riding club classes, where a horse or pony must perform a short ?show? (solo performance) and jump a single fence that varies in height from 2 feet to 3 feet 3 inches. Most shows also include show jumping and working hunter sections.

The British Horse Society oversees many shows at national, regional and local level as does the Pony Club, the British Show Pony Society and the British Show Horse Association. Breed societies, particularly those that look after the Welsh pony and the Arabian horse also organise their own shows. At local, unaffiliated level, riding clubs across Britain organise regular shows, which are often staffed by volunteers. The newly formed Showing Council is working towards officially overseeing all horse shows (non-FEI disciplines).

The Olympic equestrian disciplines are overseen by the British Equestrian Federation. However, there are several subdivisions within the federation. Dressage competitions are held separately from regular horse shows, and are overseen by British Dressage. Show jumping competitions are overseen by the British Showjumping Association (BSJA), while one day and three day eventing are overseen by British Eventing.

The United States Equestrian Federation is the American national body for equestrian sport and as such is also the recognized entity overseeing the Olympic-level United States Equestrian Team. It also organizes and sponsors horse shows for many horse breeds who wish to utilize the drug testing, judge certification and standardize rulemaking process of the USEF. In addition, it sanctions events in disciplines and lower-level competitive areas that are not internationally recognized, such as show hunter and equitation. Other US organizations such as the National Cutting Horse Association [1], United States Eventing Association (USEA) and United States Dressage Federation (USDF) organize competitions for specific disciplines, such as Cutting, and some breed organizations such as the American Quarter Horse Association sanction their own breed-specific shows.

Horse shows in the United States take several forms: Some are restricted to a particular breed, others are ?open? or ?all-breed? horse shows, which offer both classes open to all breeds as well as breed-specific classes for many different breeds. In the last few decades, American ?open? horse shows have tended to become specialized by discipline into hunter-jumper or ?sport horse? shows, dressage shows, and shows featuring English or Western riding events. However, there are still some multi-day, all-breed events that feature multiple breeds and disciplines.

There are a range of competitive equestrian events available and specific offerings range widely by nation and even by region within a given country. However, in North America, most horse shows provide the following range of classes:

The English riding classes fall into two primary styles, hunt seat and saddle seat. ?Hunt type? or sport horse classes include dressage, show jumping and show hunters, Eventing (also called horse trials), and English pleasure or Hunter Under Saddle, also known as a ?flat? class, where the event is judged on presentation, manners and rideability of the horse). ?Saddle seat? or ?Saddle type? classes are all on the flat and are mostly variations on English Pleasure, though the high action ?Park? style classes differ because they emphasize brilliant trotting action. Equitation classes judge the form and ability of the rider.

Show jumping, eventing and dressage are sometimes called ?Olympic? events, because they are the equestrian sports included in the Olympic Games.

Western or stock horse competition includes working cattle events, such as cutting, team penning and working cow horse in the USA, and campdrafting in Australia. They also include ?dry? classes (without cattle) that include western pleasure, reining and equitation.

There are also specialized classes for draft horse showing, and a number of events for horses and ponies driven in harness, including Fine Harness classes for Saddle Seat-type horses, Roadster classes that use equipment similar to that of harness racing, and the FEI-sanctioned sport of combined driving. Miniature horses also have their own shows, with a number of specialized classes.

Most horse shows offer Halter classes, also called ?breeding,? ?conformation,? or ?In-hand? classes. In these classes the horse is led without a saddle, not ridden, and its conformation and gaits are judged. To train young equestrians in halter showing techniques, horse showmanship classes (also called Showmanship in hand or youth showmanship), are offered. They are the halter equivalent of equitation, in that the handler, not the horse, is judged on his or her abilities.

Classes may be broken down by the age of horse or rider, by the number of first place ribbons earned by horse or rider, and by size or breed of horse (or pony). In addition, there is a near-infinite range of regional or specialty classes that may be offered. Various types of costume classes are frequently offered; sidesaddle classes are common; a ?leadline? or ?walk-trot? division may be offered for small children or very inexperienced riders; and assorted ?freestyle? classes, where a horse and rider perform a routine set to music, are also popular.

Rodeos and horse pulling competitions are not technically horse shows, but they are competitive equestrian events, often with a great deal of prize money. Equestrian vaulting is not usually seen at ordinary horse shows, even though it is an FEI-recognized equestrian sport. Games, such as Gymkhana or O-Mok-See competition are usually held separately from ordinary horse shows, though a few of these ?speed? events may be thrown in as ?fun classes,? particularly at 4-H, Pony Club, and other small shows.

Prize money is sometimes awarded, particularly at larger competitions. The sum varies by the placing of the rider, the prestige of the show, and the difficulty of the class. Horse Shows do not offer cash purses as large as those the Thoroughbred racing industry, though a few of the biggest show jumping, cutting and reining competitions may offer purse money into the low five figures. However, most show horses in the United States, especially those at the amateur levels, rarely win significant cash prizes during their show career. At best, a solid competitor might break even on entry fees and, if they are quite lucky, cover some travel expenses. Most money made from showing horses is indirectly earned by breeding fees paid for top horses, the sale of their offspring, or from the training fees paid to top trainers.

Trophies are usually awarded to the first place horse in a class, depending on the size of the show. In a championship event, trophies may be awarded to both the champion and the reserve champion, and at a national or international show, trophies are sometimes given to the top five to ten competitors.

Medals are given at international events such as the World Equestrian Games and the Olympics. Usually only three medals, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, are awarded to the top three individuals or teams.

Ribbons are often given for the top placings in a class. Often ribbons are given through the top six place entries, although some of the larger shows may award ribbons to the top ten. Ribbon color varies from country to country, as shown in the following chart:

Gadhafi forces killed detainees, survivors say

TRIPOLI, Libya?? Retreating loyalists of Moammar Gadhafi killed scores of detainees and arbitrarily shot civilians over the past week, as rebel forces extended their control over the Libyan capital, survivors and a human rights group said Sunday.

In one case, Gadhafi fighters opened fire and hurled grenades at more than 120 civilians huddling in a hangar used as a makeshift lockup near a military base, said Mabrouk Abdullah, 45, who escaped with a bullet wound in his side. Some 50 charred corpses were still scattered across the hangar on Sunday.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said the evidence it has collected so far "strongly suggests that Gadhafi government forces went on a spate of arbitrary killing as Tripoli was falling." The justice minister in the rebels' interim government, Mohammed al-Alagi, said the allegations would be investigated and leaders of Gadhafi's military units put on trial.

So far, there have been no specific allegations of atrocities carried out by rebel fighters, though human rights groups are continuing to investigate some unsolved cases.

AP reporters have witnessed several episodes of rebels mistreating detainees or sub-Saharan Africans suspected of being hired Gadhafi guns. Earlier this week, rebels and their supporters did not help eight wounded men, presumably Gadhafi fighters, who were stranded in a bombed out fire station in Tripoli's Abu Salim neighborhood, some pleading for water.

Najib Barakat, the health minister in the rebels' interim government, said Sunday that he does not yet have a death toll for the weeklong battle for Tripoli. Hundreds have died and more bodies, some in advanced stages of decay, are still being retrieved from the streets

Barakat said efforts are being made to identify bodies. At the least, the corpses of suspected Gadhafi fighters, especially non-Libyans, are being photographed before burial, to allow for possible future identification by relatives.

In fighting late Sunday, pro-Gadhafi elements fired Grad rockets at rebel forces gathering in the town of Nawfaliyah, not far from Gadhafi's home town of Sirte, rebels said.

Rebels gave residents there 10 days to allow rebel forces in peacefully or face an assault. A rebel spokesman said many Gadhafi loyalists have fled to Sirte and are preparing for a fierce battle.

Rebels rode into Tripoli a week ago, then fought fierce battles with Gadhafi forces, especially at the former Libyan leader's Bab al-Aziziya compound and the Abu Salim neighborhood, a regime stronghold.

As the rebels consolidated their control and Gadhafi fighters fled, reports of atrocities began emerging over the weekend.

Human Rights Watch said it has evidence indicating regime troops killed at least 17 detainees in an improvised lockup, a building of Libya's internal security service, in the Gargur neighborhood of Tripoli. A doctor who examined the corpses said about half had been shot in the back of the head and that abrasions on ankles and wrists suggested they had been bound.

The group spoke to Osama Al-Swayi who had been detained there, along with 24 others.

On Aug. 21, detainees heard rebels advancing and shouting "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great" he told Human Rights Watch.

"We were so happy, and we knew we would be released soon," he said. "Snipers were upstairs; then they came downstairs and started shooting. An old man (and another person) were shot outside our door. (The rest of us) ran out because they opened the door and said, "Quickly, quickly, go out."

He said the soldiers told them to lie on the ground. He said he heard one soldier saying, "Just finish them off." Four soldiers fired at the detainees.

"I was near the corner and got hit in the right hand, the right foot and the right shoulder. In one instant, they finished off all the people with me. ... No one was breathing. Some of them had head wounds," he told the rights group.

Gadhafi forces set up another detention center in a hangar near their Yarmouk military base in southern Tripoli.

Abdullah, who was at the hangar Sunday, said he had survived a massacre there last week. He said he had been detained in the city of Zlitan to the east on Aug. 16 and was brought to the hangar with other civilian captives. All were beaten and tortured, he said.

"They didn't even ask us questions," he said, "They just beat us and called us rats."

On Tuesday, he said, more than 120 prisoners were in the hangar when a soldier told them they'd be released at dusk, Abdullah said. A short time later, guards hurled hand grenades inside, then opened fire. He was shot and wounded in his side, but fled the hanger. He hid outside when soldiers returned and fired on other survivors. When they left, he escaped.

Ahmed Mohammed, 25, also said he survived the massacre and told a similar story. Neither knew how many had been killed nor how and when the bodies had been burned.

Amnesty International spoke to another survivor, Hussein al-Lafi, who said three of his brothers were killed that day.

"They (the guards) immediately opened fire, and I saw one of them holding a hand grenade. Seconds later, I heard an explosion, followed by four more. I fell on the ground face down. Others fell on top of me and I could feel their warm blood ... People were screaming and there were many more rounds of fire."

On Wednesday, guards at a Gadhafi military base in the Tripoli suburb of Qasr Ben Ghashir shot dead five prisoners held in solitary confinement, Amnesty said, citing survivors. Other detainees panicked and broke out of their cells when they heard the shots, survivors said. By that time, the guards had fled, the report said.

In addition to the killings at detention centers, Human Rights Watch said it collected testimony about Gadhafi soldiers randomly shooting civilians. In one incident, on Wednesday, medical lab technician Salah Kikli said he saw Gadhafi fighters pull two unarmed men, including one in medical scrubs, from an ambulance and kill them.

Al-Alagi, the justice minister, said the reported atrocities did not come as a surprise because the regime acted in a brutal manner in the past. He said that the justice system would have to be "cleansed" before investigations can begin.

It remains unclear who is responsible for some of the other killings, including of dozens of dark-skinned men whose bodies were found in two areas of Tripoli.

Reporters saw bodies in advanced stages of decomposition at Abu Salim hospital, including in the parking lot, a ward and in the basement. Barakat, the health minister, said a total of 75 corpses were found at the hospital.

Another group of bodies was strewn across a roundabout near Bab al-Aziziya, Gadhafi's compound. Five were in a field clinic, housed in a tent, and one of the corpses still had an IV sticking in his right arm.

Human Rights Watch counted a total of 29 bodies in that area, where Gadhafi loyalists, many from sub-Saharan Africa, had camped out in recent months. The group said it was not yet clear who was responsible for the deaths.

Some rebel fighters have mistreated detainees, pushing or hitting them, though others have tried to stop abuse. In many cases, wounded rebels and regime fighters were treated side-by-side in rebel-controlled hospitals.

On Sunday, in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, rebels apprehended a dozen black men and accused them of being mercenaries in Gadhafi's army. The detainees were occasionally punched before one of the rebels convinced his comrades the men were just migrant workers.

William Osas, a 32-year-old Nigerian, said he and other Africans had fled to a farm nearby to escape the fighting, and the men were detained while they were looking for food. Reporters from The Associated Press visited the farm and found hundreds of Africans living there, including many women.

Arizona shooting suspect's condition worsens (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? The man accused in the Arizona shooting rampage kept himself awake for 50 hours straight after an appeals court stopped forced medication. He walked in circles until he developed sores and then declined antibiotics to treat an infected foot. Already thin, he stopped eating and shed nine pounds.

U.S. District Judge Larry Burns described Jared Lee Loughner's behavior to explain his refusal to overrule prison doctors who decided to resume forced medication July 18. The drugging, he said, "seems entirely appropriate and reasonable to me."

Loughner's attorneys argued unsuccessfully that a court should review whether the forcible medications could resume.

The ruling came in a three-hour pretrial hearing Friday that offered insights into Loughner's fragile condition at federal prison in Springfield, Mo., where he is on suicide watch.

Christina Pietz, a psychologist who is treating him at the prison, testified by phone that Loughner is "less psychotic" than in the past and that she is now more concerned about depression.

She worried that videotaping her sessions with him ? as Loughner's lawyers requested ? would only exacerbate his ills. She said he turned "almost defeated" and withdrawn when she broached the idea on Wednesday.

"He feels as though he has no control about what's going on around him, and this is just one more element," she said.

Pietz said Loughner sobs uncontrollably at times and steps aside during their meetings to cover his face.

Burns reaffirmed his earlier ruling to prohibit the videotaping, even after Loughner's attorneys agreed to limit their request. He said it would add to Loughner's stress and impair the psychological evaluation.

Loughner has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges in the Jan. 8 shooting that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, at a meet-and-greet event held by the congresswoman outside a Tucson grocery store.

Loughner has been at the Missouri prison since late May after mental health experts determined he suffers from schizophrenia. Burns ruled him mentally unfit to stand trial.

He was forcibly medicated between June 21 and July 1 after prison doctors found he was a danger to others. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals halted the medications while it considered an appeal of Burns' decision to allow the drugs. The appeals court has scheduled a hearing in San Francisco on Tuesday.

The prison decided to resume the forced medications July 18 after doctors found Loughner's condition has significantly worsened and that he was a danger to himself. Defense attorneys argued that the prison was violating the 9th Circuit's order but the appeals court refused to step in.

Friday's hearing was held in San Diego, where Burns is based. He was appointed to the case after all federal judges in Arizona recused themselves. John Roll, the chief federal judge for Arizona, died in the January rampage.

Beyond that, our gender, sexual orientation, race, and ethnicity are powerful factors in how the world views us and how we accept others. within our differing environments, we have learned how to communicate and relate to people. from our knowledge and exposure to different methods of communicating, we further make choices regarding which methods are most comfortable for us. the ways individuals chose to communicate across varying ethnicities and cultures varies drastically and can often lead to miscommunication. this is because individuals from varying cultures can interpret the exact same signs and words in completely different ways. this breakdown in communication can cause serious problems, particularly in global markets, but also within offices where diverse workforces are uneducated about each others methods and mannerisms, and the meanings they hold.

There is an interesting scene in the movie, my big Fat Greek Wedding (Brooks, 2002), during the wedding when the bride is walking down the isle. half of the congregation, the bride?s side of the family, spits on her as she walks to the altar. this cultural expression of good luck by her Greek family, in American culture, is considered extremely vile, offensive, and one of the most profound methods of degradation in modern society. this is just one example of how a simple, heartfelt gesture by her family could lead to potential disaster in another venue.

From personal experience, when I lived in Bolivia, South America for three years, my transition into the culture there was aided by several books and a vast of information provided by other Americans already in country. One such book by mark Cramer is Culture Shock Bolivia. some of the differences my husband and I had to acclimate to in the Bolivian society included simply saying hello and goodbye (everybody gets a kiss on the cheek, but men add a swift jab to the right or both shoulders), attending parties (should be 30-40 minutes late and bring a gift, preferably leather products or wine), scheduling and eating meals (lunch was a large meal, followed by a nap; dinner was a snack and generally occurred at 8 or 9pm), shopping (businesses were closed from noon to 3 or 4 pm for the afternoon nap), and vanity (cosmetic surgery was common and girls 16 years old and younger often receive breast implants and rhinoplasty). These differences, while seemingly insignificant, were as important in their culture as Americans find covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough, taking a 30 or 45 minute lunch and returning promptly to work to continue your day to 5 or 6pm, and not cutting in line at the grocery. to commit an infraction would be an insult, rude, or worse. Personal relationships could be damaged by ignorance of what is culturally acceptable, not only in the Americas, but throughout the world.

When these varying cultures collide in the workplace, regardless of origination, the mannerisms that the individuals were brought up with and taught are socially acceptable can result in friction. this friction can start in personal relationships, but could rise to levels to interfere with productivity and customer relationships. for instance, one of the most predominate business tactics I encountered while in Bolivia was the determination of individuals and businesses to avoid saying no. this is apparently also common in Japanese culture, according to the readings in Management Communication, 3rd Ed., Chapter 10 (O?Rourke, 2007). a refusal to say no, even when the request cannot be accommodated can result in misunderstandings in business. for instance, a manager may request a report from an employee who was brought up in business to agree to anything, regardless of the deadline, amount of work involved, current workload, etc. That manager may be left standing in a meeting with nothing to say because of a cultural misunderstanding. Jobs could ultimately be in jeopardy as a result of this miscommunication between cultures. That same employee handling complaints may ultimately agree to every demand of an unsatisfied customer, only to make the relationship worse when those demands are not met as promised.

Another example where cultural differences can cause problems in business is more personal in nature. some French and Indian cultures do not wear deodorant. for employees sharing close space, this can lead to uncomfortable confrontations and unpleasant working conditions, regardless of understanding why the deodorant is not used. an employee that prefers a more natural body odor working as a receptionist or in a customer service or sales position in the United States will likely be thought of as a poor representative of the business. Fear that their cultural difference may give a negative impression to clients and customers could ultimately threaten their job.

While cultural differences and diversity can cause problems in the work place, there are ways around these differences to mitigate the damage that may be caused. the first and most obvious is education. In a diverse workplace, I would recommend that an annual training on cultural differences be established. this training should cover not only all cultures represented in the workforce, but others that are prevalent in the local community. One recommendation is to allow volunteers within the organization prepare some of the material to present about their own culture. this not only ensures that differences important to the individuals are specifically addressed, but also allows coworkers to appreciate each other on a personal level. Such an education would benefit not only the majority represented in the organization, but the cultural minority could benefit from the knowledge of what is considered socially-acceptable in their environment. a great suggestion used at Ricoh Electronics, as mentioned by Sangeeta Gupta, is to highlight different ethnic cultures during holiday celebrations (Gupta, 2008). In a particularly rich and diverse office, it might not be unreasonable to find ways to incorporate and highlight different cultures throughout the year at corporate functions. Could the annual picnic consist of food from various cultures and music from a few others?

This leads me to my second recommendation to remedy potential cultural differences in the workplace. That would be the establishment of policies. if the need arises, establishing a policy that all employees wear deodorant, but refrain from excessive use of cologne or perfume, may be in the best interest of management. Care should be taken to not single out one individual or culture, and preferably, multiple policies should be developed at the same time. while this may end up appearing as ludicrous in the long-run as some laws in existence, such as the law in Iowa that states that one armed piano players must perform for free (dumblaws.com,) it may actually reduce some of the cultural differences among employees and create a unique culture within the organization itself. Having the organization develop a culture all its own, where everyone has the same way of doing things and utilizes the same methods and mannerisms to communicate (at least most of the time) will decrease instances of miscommunication, as well as rudeness and misunderstands on a personal level among employees and with customers.

Ultimately, there is no way to avoid living in a culturally diverse society and working in a culturally diverse environment. Even if employees are not diverse, the customers and clientele will likely present cultural diversity. It would benefit everyone to learn the cultural differences most predominant in their business and community and embrace them. There are ways to work with almost any difference and learning to communicate beyond these differences will benefit everyone. In the end, it all boils down to respect for each other as individuals. we must learn to appreciate the differences and recognize that learning these different methods of communicating and doing business can not only enrich us personally, but enhance our businesses across a larger and culturally diverse market.

Q: I am not sure of the arrangement between the buyer and their Realtor. Through the Realtors, we signed a lease/purchase option last September 2010. Can buyer and seller agree to a sale by owner without Realtors in October 2011?

A: To answer your question, one would have to review the lease/option agreement you signed with the Realtor. Also, lease/option to buy contracts can be legally troublesome. I recommended you consult with a real estate attorney in your area before taking this road.

,strong>A: Hello, Sounds to me like you have a lease option contract already in place. I am assuming you as the seller had a Realtor representing you and buyer had a Realtor representing them. I would review all contracts as you probably owe the listing agent/brokerage a commission as their marketing and listing brought you the seller the buyer. Usually, the listing agreement and or lease option agreement covers that buyer no matter when they would execute the purchase. Really no different than selling your home ?normally? just a protracted escrow so to speak. If in doubt consult an attorney.
