DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don?t understand how you can recommend birth-control pills for acne. Birth-control pills have been linked to blood clots, strokes and other life-threatening illnesses. Isn?t acne minor? Why complicate the issue with something that causes a worse problem? Also, in today?s health-conscious society, I am amazed that we have banned high-school boys from taking steroids, yet you and other doctors recommend steroids for high-school girls in the form of birth-control pills. This is an appalling double standard. ? M.W.

ANSWER: Your zeal is admirable. Your presentation of the facts isn?t. Millions of women have taken birth-control pills for the more than 50 years they?ve been available without grave danger to their health. A small number have experienced serious side effects, but no more so than with other medicines, including aspirin. The original birth-control pills had a higher concentration of estrogen than do today?s pills.
