It's safe to update your iPhone and iPad apps again

3 hrs.

In the last couple of days, you may have noticed that recently updated iOS apps suddenly became prone to crashing every time you tried to open them. It was annoying and we warned you to avoid downloading updates until the issue was resolved.

Well, consider this the "all clear" signal.

I asked an Apple spokesperson about the strange issues and this is what she told me:

We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded. It affected a small number of users. The issue has been rectified and we don?t expect it to occur again. Users who experienced an issue launching an app caused by this server bug can delete the affected app and re-download it.

In overly?simplified?terms? iOS checks whether users should be able to launch an app ? specifically if they have a key to unlock it.?Well, the system in charge of generating the keys was spitting out bent ones, so iOS wouldn't let the apps start up.

Apple has taken care of the problem and anyone who was affected by it should simply delete the troubled apps and re-download them.
