How I Met Your Mother
Season 8: Episode 6: ?Splitsville?
?We have to rush Robin to the hospital because somehow she swallowed her vocal chords and they got lodged in her rectum, because she?s talking out of her ass.?
The fall of break-ups has finally come to an end! Barney, Ted and Robin are no longer in the credulity straining relationships that they started the season in. Interestingly, it was the least serious couple that lasted the longest. Where Barney and Ted?s engagements failed, Robin?s hook-up prevailed ? at least until Nick injured his groin and she had to go three days without sex. Then all bets are off.? Without a post-coital haze to cloud her judgment she realizes that Nick is a total idiot. Just really dumb. Stupid really.
And so he must go. At least, that?s how Barney feels. Everyone else, including Robin, remain surprisingly ambivalent. But Robin takes Nick to Splitsville, an ice cream parlor where all of New York goes to end relationships, and spends most of the episode struggling to break up with Nick. First, he cries when he finds out he can?t play basketball, then when he tries to have sex with her. If Barney didn?t show up to do the breaking up for her, she probably wouldn?t have done it at all. And if he hadn?t been interrupted by an unwanted phone call, he probably would have kissed Robin on the street. But, alas, I think we have to go back to the Robin and Ted storyline once more before we get on the road to Barney and Robin?s engagement.
Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily haven?t had sex since Marvin was born, and they are taking out their sexual frustration in different ways. Marshall has become obsessed with exercise and Lily with her friend?s sex lives. After a half an hour of not so subtle hints Ted finally volunteers to take Baby Doll Marvin for a walk so his friends can get down to business. It?s the nicest thing he?s done in seasons.
Ted
This episode was slight but it was much more enjoyable than last week?s failed engagement debacle and it?s probably because Ted was basically an after-thought this week. His failures were limited to after-work basketball. No new girlfriends. Instead his habit of grand gestures was redirected towards helping his friends get laid. B+?
Marshall & Lily
While I thought Lily?s obvious sexual frustration was way too a tad much it reminded me of when the gang went to a strip club back in season five ? Lily?s sexuality has a history of being weirdly public at times. I loved the shout out to suddenly skinny Segel. He looks great! Does he have a movie coming out? Also: apparently working out with a baby is a thing. Realism!
Lily ? B
Marshall ? B+
Barney & Robin
Ugh. Just get married already. I?m bored with Robin triangulating between Ted, Barney and Another Random Plot Convenience Guy. And with Barney confessing his love and then playing the ?Just jokes!? card.
Robin ? B-
Barney ? C?
?Splitsville? ? B-
Again, slight but enjoyable. There?s still a lot of larger issues ? namely, we?re covering the same ground with Barney/Robin/Ted that we have for seasons ? but any episode that makes Ted seem like a sad nerd and Marshall an impassioned leader of weirdos is fine by me.
?????????????????????????????????
Extra Credit
- Hanging out at Marshall and Lily?s eating Chinese food is exactly what the gang should be doing post-Marvin.
Demerits
- Why can?t the gang let Robin just have a sex idiot?
- Poor Patrice! Poor Robin! This whole storyline makes me so uncomfortable.
